Being Diagnosed With Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disease that deteriorates normal human functions. Individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease need various degrees of aid and care, from simply reminding them how to do daily activities to physically helping them live their day-to-day lives.  Those who require continuous attention and regular, round-the-clock monitoring are often living in care homes that can provide this type of care.

Ideas To Help Family Celebrate The Season

To follow our last blog, in this one we offer helpful tips to families who have a loved one diagnosed with Dementia/Alzheimer’s disease in a care facility, and want to bring them home for the holidays.  See below a few ideas that will help your family celebrate the season comfortably with your loved one:

·         As familiar space is the most comfortable for your loved one, it’s best to first know how well they will fare in your home.  Do a trial run of bringing them into your home a few days/weeks prior to the holidays to see their reaction to the change in environment.  If this is too drastic a change, it might be best that your family visit them in the care home instead.

·         Always have plan B during the holidays: be in contact with the care facility, and make sure you’re able to return your loved one at any time. So if they are not feeling well or become uncomfortable, you have an immediate solution.

·         If you are taking your loved one to your home, make sure you obtain any medications they need. Ask the care facility about their medication schedule.  Also, become instructed in how to administer their medication. (Example: if they like juice or apple sauce with their medications, they may not want to take their pill with water)

·         If it’s best that your loved one with Alzheimer’s stays at the care facility. You can ask about scheduled parties at the facility that you can attend, or set a date for a special visit.  Arrange with the facility to have a private room for visiting and bring them a home cooked favourite meal or baked goods, familiar music and family photos that they’d enjoy to look at.
