Maria A. Castro, MPD, Bsc., DAP&E

Dementia Care Academy and Client Care Coordinator

Maria is a Public Health and Community Empowerment Professional and a Mental Wellness Advocate. She is passionate about empowering and inspiring people to help themselves and others.

She is very close to her family of birth and as a former family caregiver, she has a soft spot in her heart for seniors and those who are differently abled. She believes in “making the unknown known” and that we can all affect a positive change if we can learn to talk and listen to each other starting with issues that concern us to courageously sharing our ideas for solutions.

Since crossing paths with Karen Tyrell in 2016, while working as the Program Manager for the Let’s Do Lunch (a Meal-on-Wheels Initiative) and the Unpaid Family Caregivers Program for the Burnaby Seniors Outreach Services Society, she was inspired to advocate for those with dementia and their professional and unpaid family caregivers.

One of her favourite movies is “Patch Adams,” and the TV Show “New Amsterdam,” which is a depiction of what she believes is her “unicorn” of what healthcare should be and how healthcare professionals have the potential of becoming.

Maria holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in Public Health and is also in the process of completing her CDCP™ Dementia Designation. She has been an active volunteer in causes from poverty, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, mental health, senior and family caregiver rights and dementia care.

Like Karen, she also loves to dance, play video games and watch Netflix (when she has time). She was a Certified Zumba Instructor and a Les Mills Body Combat fan.

She believes that anyone who is willing can be taught and educated; but, it takes a caring and compassionate heart to take all this learning [from Zumba to caringly holding an elderly person’s hand as they wait outside a doctor’s office], into meaningful daily practice.

Johanna Roxas

Website and Content Manager

Johanna Roxas is the Website and Content Manager for Dementia Solutions. She manages the company’s website content and social media marketing.

Johanna holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce, Major in Entrepreneurship, from St. Scholastica College in the Philippines.

She loves to learn new things and adapts quickly to new software, applications and technology. She believes that there is always a fun and easier way to do things and if you find it, then you can reduce your stress.

Prior to working with Karen Tyrell, she has successfully managed a chain of coffee stores and other commercial establishments in the metropolitan area. She has developed more efficient systems, checklists and task delegations, resulting in improved quality in customer service and timely delivery of service.

She also has an excellent track record as a Virtual Assistant and a Content Manager with other international/foreign companies, specifically in the area of social media marketing, video editing and transcription, podcasts production, web design and maintenance, email marketing and other related tasks.

A light-hearted, helpful and resourceful team player, you can rely on Johanna to get things done, sometimes, even before you even thought about the next steps!

Johanna supports, believes and practices the importance of balancing life and work. In her free time, she makes sure she spends quality time with her family. She enjoys playing video games and watching movies.

Working with Karen exposed Johanna to the world of dementia. She is now also a Certified Dementia Care Provider and like Karen, she would often remind people, “ask why, what’s the reason behind the behavior?”

Dorothy Leclair

Dementia Care Advisor

Dorothy is committed to supporting families because she believes dementia is not the end to a meaningful life. She knows that living well with dementia requires a supportive team standing alongside both the caregiver and the person living with the diagnosis.

Dorothy brings a complement of skills including degrees in psychology and education, clinical counselling training, and personal experience as her mother’s live-in caregiver for 7 years. In addition, she has a strong track record of providing practical solutions and support for many families during her years spent with the Alzheimer’s Society of BC.

Due to her own experience supporting her mother, Dorothy knows that the diagnosis is the start of a journey that will see great transformation in the skills, abilities, and needs of both the caregiver and the person with the diagnosis. As a Dementia Care Advisor, Dorothy is looking forward to compassionately supporting you as you navigate your changing needs.

To ensure people living with dementia, their families, and friends are not left out, Dorothy has worked hard to promote Dementia-friendly Communities. In 2018 she established the first Dementia-friendly Café in Burnaby. The following year, she hired an artistic director to bring to life the New Dementians, an intergenerational community choir.

Dorothy is excited to bring her educational credentials, living experience as a caregiver, and decades of support to families to the Personalized Dementia Solutions team. She looks forward to consulting with you in our free 20-minute session to explore how she can best help you and your family.
