An iPod Soothes The Soul of People with Alzheimer’s Disease

It’s no secret that music can unleash powerful emotions in people.  Since the 1940s, music therapy has been used in nursing homes with the elderly.  Recently, the introduction of the iPod has made it possible to get and share music with everyone at any location.
At least, that is the theory and hope of a gentleman named Michael Rossato-Bennett. His projects aims are “to support the initiation of iPod-based personalized music programs regardless of one’s location and raise public awareness about the benefits of keeping engaged with a rich, personal music environment regardless of physical, cognitive, or social condition.” One’s emotional attachment to music can be incredibly strong and “awaken” individuals affected by the symptoms of dementia.

The key to making this program successful is to make it personalized, to discover the individual’s favourite songs.  Just think of your favourite song and how it makes you feel.  As neurologist Oliver Sacks has explained, “Music imprints itself on the brain deeper than any other human experience.  Music evokes emotion and emotion can bring with it memory.” For this reason, music can have a huge impact on those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. This effect can be even further enhanced when combined with a qualified, professional music therapist.

For evidence of the profound impact music can have on dementia patients, watch this quick clip taken from the documentary “Alive Inside” by Michael Rossato-Bennett: Henry’s Story

It is the hope of Michael Rossato-Bennett, “that this film awakens people’s hearts and helps make it possible to bring music to those in nursing homes, people who don’t even know how deeply they need music’s gifts.”

It’s never too late to introduce music into the life of a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.  Ask at the care facility if they have implemented personalized music therapy.  If not, encourage them to do so.

Christmas is just around the corner … wouldn’t an iPod be a lovely gift? http://www.lbda.org/

Merry Christmas!
