2. I will be going over a review of what is dementia. It’s a common question. I also want to talk about what is delirium because a lot of people get that mixed up and I think it’s so important for family members and frontline staff to understand the difference.
3. What is dementia? This is a common question. The definition by the World Health Organization is that dementia is not a disease it’s known as a syndrome. Delirium is known as a medical emergency.
4. What is Alzheimer’s disease? As mentioned, it’s the most common. Dr Alzheimer was the one who discovered these abnormal plaques and tangles in the brain.
5. What I want to share with you now is the common dementia-related behaviors that we may see in the Early to Middle stages of certain types of dementia.
6. How do we cope? Accepting that some of these behaviours as the new Norm is hard to do but if you can do that sometimes it makes it easier if you can change your mindset it will help you cope better.
7. The secret for managing the situations related to dementia-related behaviors and those changes is realizing that there is a reason for the behaviour.
8. To crack the dementia code we first need to believe there’s a reason for the behaviour. Step number 1 we have to ask “why” put on your detective hats to investigate why.
9. We encourage creative problem-solving and understanding when caring for individuals with dementia and using creative solutions to address challenging behaviours.
10. We emphasize the importance of practice and implementing the two-step process for managing behaviours in individuals with dementia. We encourage asking the question “why”.
11. Here are several important tips and reminders for caregiving for individuals with dementia. These tips are designed to improve the quality of care and communication for individuals with dementia and to minimize stress for caregivers.
