The Importance Of Reading
Reading for pleasure is a wonderful way to keep our minds engaged and for keeping language intact. We encourage children and teens to read often. To develop language and learn how to communicate. However, many adults stop reading when their daily demands and careers take over their lives.
Some adults stop reading because they feel they have no time for it. And some stop reading because they are simply not interested anymore. The Huffington Post writes “One In Four UK Adults Don’t Read For Fun, Poll Reveals.” Not to say that everyone in our society doesn’t read for pleasure. Because that’s not true, but many are too busy or just would rather do something else than read for pleasure.
What does reading do?
It stimulates the mind and helps you learn new words. Remembering old words, put together better sentences, and communicate well.
What does this have to do with Alzheimer or Dementia? As Alzheimer’s ravages the brain, language breaks down. A person’s ability to understand and communicate diminishes. They aren’t able to remember words, remember what words mean, or comprehend when others speak.
The reason it’s important not to stop reading, and to read regularly, is to help keep Alzheimer’s disease from knocking on your door. Make an effort to keep the brain thinking, learning, and consistently engaged.
If you’ve fallen out of the habit, why not take up pleasure reading once again.
