Healthy Gums & a Healthy Brain- Preventing Dementia with a Toothbrush

When longing for pearly white teeth we turn to our trusted friend by the bathroom sink—our toothbrush. But did you know that your toothbrush helps protect not only your teeth and gums, but also your brain? Dental health and brain health go hand-in-hand according to a recent study by King’s College London and the University of Southampton which found that gum disease and having fewer teeth heightens the risk of developing dementia.

Researchers uncovered that the same bacteria causing gum disease can also trigger inflammations in the brain that damage cognitive functions, such as memory, and leave the brain more vulnerable to dementia. Additionally, cognitive decline in those who already have dementia can be accelerated by the added consequences of gum disease at a rate six times faster than those with dementia and healthier gums.

So what can we do to arm ourselves against gum disease and its effects on our brain? We can start by using our toothbrush. Brushing teeth, frequently and thoroughly, guards against damaging bacteria, and, as we now know, it will also do your brain a favour. In addition to the preventive benefits, warding off gum disease in those who already have dementia may also be an effective treatment option in slowing cognitive decline.

It seems there’s more to a toothbrush than the promise of fresh breath and a photo-ready smile. It’s an important foot soldier on the frontlines of the battle to keep our brain healthy. So use it often and use it well!
